Dengue cases surge in Rawalpindi, 84 new cases reported in 24 hours
RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi has witnessed a sharp rise in dengue cases, with 84 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 1,255 for the year so far. According to the District Health Department’s data released on Monday, 174 patients are currently undergoing treatment in the city’s allied hospitals. While dengue fatalities remain at five, medical authorities are giving special attention to the critically ill patients to prevent further losses. The data highlights that Pothohar Town Peri Urban areas were the most affected, accounting for 47 of the new cases, while 14 cases were recorded in Rawalpindi’s Cantt Board area, 13 from Municipal Corporation localities, and 3 from Chaklala Cantt Board area. These areas have become hotspots for dengue transmission due to favorable conditions for mosquito breeding. In response to the outbreak, health officials have intensified efforts to control the spread of the virus. A major component of this campaign has been strict enforcement of dengue prevention measures, particularly targeting locations where dengue larvae have been detected. Since the beginning of 2024, fines amounting to Rs. 16.8 million have been imposed on individuals and organizations found violating dengue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These punitive measures are part of a broader initiative to ensure that residents and businesses comply with guidelines designed to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. The rise in cases has put pressure on health facilities in the region, prompting authorities to step up public awareness campaigns and encourage community participation in controlling the spread. Residents are being urged to take preventive steps such as clearing stagnant water, using mosquito nets, and maintaining cleanliness in and around their homes. The district’s health officials have also been conducting fumigation drives and larvicide spraying in the affected areas, in addition to tracking and treating patients. As the dengue season continues, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent further outbreaks and minimize the risk to public health.
